ASM Case Studies

A series of case studies have been produced that document concrete examples of equitable, effective, and sustainable local-level partnerships which include small-scale miners or their communities as a guide to the development of better policy and practice in the different jurisdictions of the Asia-Pacific region.

The case studies have been undertaken in India, and other parts of South Asia, in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, China and the Philippines by different people from the network. The case studies can be found here.

Each of the local case studies focuses on interventions which aim to:

• bring forth locally-based agency in promoting sustainability of livelihoods
• resolve a specific problem affecting the livelihoods of small-scale miners, their families or communities; and
• to achieve measurable progress towards one or more of the Millennium Development Goals (see Appendix) within a specific local context

Each of the interventions featured in these case studies also:

• involves a partnership between local communities and one or more of: (a) government agencies; (b) civil society organizations; (c) large-scale mining companies; and
• have a reasonable chance of being replicated in different countries of the region, and therefore be worthy of dissemination to a wider regional audience.
